Araras sits at the edge of a strip of gallery forest, the kind of tree line that follows a watercourse through otherwise open Pantanal grassland. That edge condition shaped the whole brief: the deck had to clear a stand of taller trees hugging the water while staying close enough to the lodge for an early-morning walk before the heat sets in.

The structure is a bolted steel lattice, galvanized against the humidity that gallery forest holds onto long after the surrounding fields have dried out. Stair landings are spaced up the climb rather than left as one long run, which matters more here than it looks on a drawing — groups stop to watch a mixed flock cross the canopy gap long before they reach the top.

The edge of gallery forest is where the birding happens — species from the open field and species from the closed canopy both pass through it.
