RPPN Samuel Klabin is a private natural heritage reserve in the Atlantic Forest, and this tower sits over ground that is actively being reforested rather than mature, closed canopy. That gives it a second job beyond birding: from the deck, reserve staff can watch the planted stands fill in year over year, which is a slower and more useful kind of observation than a single site visit ever gives you.

Twenty metres was enough to clear the current growth with margin to spare as the forest closes in — the kind of decision that has to account for canopy that will look different in a decade than it does at handover.

A tower over a reforestation site is watching two things at once: the birds today, and the forest becoming what it's meant to be.
